Amsterdam Museums

The museums here are famous and are some of the main tourist attractions. In fact you must visit at least one of the museums to really visit Amsterdam (our pick is the Van Gogh Museum - we loved it!)

There are over 50 museums to choose from. They include the works of the famous Van Gogh and Rembrandt, to the history of Anne Frank House, to the light hearted Sex Museum, Cannabis Museum, Vodka Museum, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and the Dungeon.

You can buy a museum pass to visit the museums. A great one that offers entry to 5 museums of your choice, many discounts and skip the line access is the Holland Pass - City Pass for Amsterdam and beyondAmsterdam Museums.

Find and book tours and activities on Book ahead to save time and money!

Van Gogh Museum

Home to the largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh's work in the world. The permanent collection displays 200 of the 864 works of art that survived history in this beautiful museum, including Sunflowers and Starry Night.

You will also see 437 drawings and 31 prints by Vincent Van Gogh.

This Van Gogh museum showcases letters written by Van Gogh to fellow artists and his brother asking for guidance and support during his troubled times.

We decided to visit this museum, even though we aren't big museum people. We were so happy we did and really enjoyed it. There is something about being amongst these priceless pieces of history that is peaceful to me.

Go early and when you walk into the museum, make sure you go straight to the paintings you are most interested in, otherwise you may never get close to it as it can be really busy in the summer months.

The extra 5 euro for the audio tour is worth it if you are interested in the history of Van Gogh, or sign up for one of the English Tours at the reception desk in advance (maximum 15 visitors).

The Van Gogh Museum hours are from 10 am to 6 pm daily, but is open late on Fridays - till 10 pm.

Buy your tickets before you get to any of the Amsterdam museums to avoid the long line ups. You can include your admission ticket with many of the canal cruises, which may also include a skip the line pass (in the busy months this is so worth it!).

Your hotel may sell tickets or better yet go as part of a tour that includes tickets to the one of the Amsterdam Museums. You can also purchase them online from the museum.
