Keep them distracted

The biggest mistake that I see when looking at other families traveling is that they assume the experience will be entertaining enough for their kids. It's not. Flying can be overwhelming or boring for children. So my family is careful to bring toys and other distractions to keep the kids happy. That includes bringing baggies of their favorite snacks and any music players or books that they love. The more distracted they are, the happier they are when they land.
